Challenges
Solveig eagerly participated in the annual “Challenge” competitions posed by her Bay Oaks Quilt Guild. Shown here are her entries for the 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Challenges. The 2005 challenge was to use only black, white and one crayon colour: Solveig was assigned red/orange. She entered the first three quilts shown, the most dramatic of which is the “Cowichan Sun Mask”. The 2008 Challenge was an “Ugly Fabric Challenge”: the assigned “ugly” fabric had to be used predominantly, and up to four other fabrics could be used. The quilt circumference had to be between 72 and 96 inches. Solveig entered seven quilts, and made a copy of one of them for Tara, who had helped with some of the quilt designs. The 2010 Challenge was to make use of all four exchanged fabrics on a Four Seasons theme, plus two more fabrics: any method, any size. Solveig’s entry, “Flower Power”, has 110 flowers appliquéd on a striking single variegated fabric. It was designed to hang in Solveig’s Fredericton home’s back stairwell. The 2011 Challenge was to use four patches and quarter square triangles that were made by each guild member and exchanged over 12 months. The 2012 Challenge was to make a self-portrait.
These challenges fired Solveig’s creativity, and three of the quilts shown here: “Cowichan Sun Mask”, “Flower Power”, and “Who Dat?” (her self portrait) are among her best quilts.
